Critical Appraisal Day

The critical appraisal day took place on the 25th of March, 2019 from 10:45 AM – 1 PM. This event was hosted and organised by Dr. sahar abdelmaqsoud, associate professor of community medicine, and the student union as part of the newly found Journal club.

The chief guest for the day was, Dr. Tom Loney, associate professor of public health and epidemiology, MBR University, and the moderators included Dr. Mirza Baig, Dr. Samiya arghaly and Dr. Sahar abdelmaqsoud, among attendees were also faculty members and doctors of DMCG.

The program was started off by a brief introduction of the attendees, especially Dr. Tom Loney, followed by defining of critical appraisal by Sadiyah Hashmath, student unions’ head of science. This was followed by Dr. Tom Loney’s intriguing talk on navigating through research literature and skills of critical appraisal which attracted the students’ attention. The research material for the talk had been previously provided to the students via Email along with evaluation checklists that were given to all the students prior to the event. Subsequently, a talk on critical readin g of a published article and basics of research, by Dr. Hafez Ahmed, Professor of Biochemistry.

The talks were followed by open disc   ussion, in which students had the opportunity to clarify any doubts or queries to the panel, consisting of Dr. Tom loney, Dr. Hafez Ahmed, Dr. Sahar abdelmaqsoud, Dr.Samiyah Fergaly, and Dr Mirza Baig. The program concluded with a token of appreciation for the speakers, both, Dr.Tom Loney and Dr. Hafez Ahmed by Dr.Sahar and a group picture. The event attracted great number of students from both 1st and 2nd years and few students from 3rd year, 4th and 5^th year were also present. The event was a success and proved to be a great learning experience for the students.
